Trường's journey in IT and leadership
From curious IT student to a dedicated mentor
On a journey driven by curiosity
From 8th to 10th grade, Trường excelled in chemistry and won many provincial competitions. One day, a teacher recruited students for an informatics class. Driven by curiosity, he joined and began learning about electronic components and basic coding. Little did he know that this experience would ignite his passion for IT.
»At 16, I was wavering between chemistry and informatics. Eventually, my heart chose informatics because I appreciated the future possibilities that lay within IT. It not only brings me joy personally but also allows me to work on projects that benefit those around me«
After high school, Trường moved to Ho Chi Minh City to study Software Engineering at FPT University. As a freshman, he attended thesis defence sessions out of curiosity, which soon led him to question proper software development practices. This drove him to network with seniors and participate in various coding events and student projects.
Saying yes to opportunities
In his second year at university, Trường was invited by his senior IT fellows to work for a startup. Despite facing many challenges as a newbie, Trường saw this as an invaluable opportunity to learn and improve his communication skills.
Reflecting on this period, Trường said, »At that time, all I had were my enthusiasm, courage, and a thirst for learning new things. Joining real-life projects helped me understand the behind-the-scenes of IT and how it benefits end users.«
» I thought working at the university was where I’d settle down for good…
In his final year, Trường paused all work to focus on his Graduation thesis, which aimed to digitalise the school’s administrative system. After successfully defending the project, he was invited to work for the university to continue developing the system. He felt he was on the right path: using technology to benefit the university and his skills to guide young people involved in the project. However, due to a new development orientation within the university’s internal board, the project came to a halt.
… but Netcompany opened up a new horizon for me«
Trường learned about Netcompany through a friend’s introduction. Although the title “IT consultant” was new to him, his boldness and eagerness to learn led him to apply. Initially, he worked as a developer on a project for sustainable business and supply chain solutions. After six months, he was promoted to Technical Lead and took on management responsibilities, ensuring smooth communication and high-quality collaboration between the Vietnam team, the UK team, and the client.
At the beginning of 2024, Trường was promoted to Manager. Although his initial road was to follow the architect path, he gradually took on more management responsibilities, focusing on improving processes and supporting his team members. This shift led him down the management path, almost unintentionally.
»As a new manager, there’s still much for me to learn. However, seeing the project progress and my team members grow reassures me that I'm heading in the right direction,« Trường says.
Lead by example
In his new role as a manager, he shifted his focus to overseeing the team’s overall progress, creating more opportunities for his team members to take on responsibilities and grow.
To support his team, especially new members, Trường frequently organises sessions to share his extensive experience, highlight essential skills for the job, and help build a solid foundation for everyone. He ensures that team members can manage their daily tasks while gradually gaining the confidence to take on more responsibilities without feeling overwhelmed. His focus is on investing in long-term growth and development through mentoring, rather than simply managing immediate tasks.
